Transforming Climate Messaging into Meals

Between the history of enslaved Africans and agriculture in America, and the intersectionality of lived experience overcoming poverty with plant-based lifestyles, Black Americans are primed to provide wisdom, insight and innovation to feed our country’s people. Remember the “old school” skill of transforming little of nothing into something magically delicious? It is derived from generations of turning scraps into seasonings, rations into refreshments and sprinkling mustard seed faith to feed multitudes. Think about it—most historically Black colleges and universities were founded as agricultural and mechanical training institutes designed to educate and transition the Black labor class into the industrial era. How many of us played the role of George Washington Carver and his peanut farm at Tuskegee as part of the elementary school Black History Month program? Evidence of African American connections to the environment and land through food production became stronger with the expansion of land-grant colleges for Black students. The 1890 land-grant institutions program established state-affiliated Black colleges and universities that focused on research in the areas of agriculture, forestry and food. Under these programs, historically Black colleges and universities develop innovations around food production, renewable energy, biotechnology and food safety to this day.

Luckily, the shift is happening as all environmental leaders, regardless of race, class or creed, recognize the short time left to take bold implementable actions on climate that can innovate and balance our food systems before time runs out.
